Tired of chipped nail polish? The fingernail Gods have answered our prayers! Our new favorite at Styles 101 is Shellac by CND. Shellac goes on like a nail polish but wears like a gel set of acrylic fingers nails. Here's why we love this stuff!!!
What they say:
  • 14 day wear
  • High gloss shine
  • Zero dry time
  • No nail damage
Here's what we say:

14 day wear: I am a hair stylist and have my nails in water constantly. Normally I paint my nails 3 times a week due to polish chipping. With Shellac, I had NO chipping what so ever! I was amazed at how long the color lasted. At day 10 my nails look like I painted them the night before. The only reason why I had to take it off and change it was because my fingernails grew and it looked as if I had on fake nails that needed a fill. We give CND 's claim of 14 day wear a 5 out of 5.
High gloss shine: Shellac shines like the best top coat finish they have on the market. Even 10 days later, fingernails are still shinny. We give CND's claim of high shine a 5 out of 5.
Zero Dry Time: This means after the nails are painted and cured under the UV light and the process is all done, there is no dry time. And they are right. Right after application is done feel free to grab the car keys, fold laundry or shower. We give CND's claim of no dry time a 5 out of 5.
No nail damage: We give CND's claim of no nail damage a 4 out of 5. Why a 4? Only because when you take the polish off, you must do a little bit of buffing. There's no nail peeling like when you remove acrylic nails, however we still felt nails were a tiny bit different then as if we took off regular nail polish.
I also had to add this benefit of Shellac. Because this acts like a gel, it protects nails from splitting and chipping. So while you have the Shellac on, nails grow longer because the Shellac adds a layer of protection. Nails feel as if you have a acrylic gel overlay on them so they are super hard and do not bend hardly at all. So if you're trying to grow your nails, this is the perfect nail product!
What is Shellac?
We could get all technical but lets make it simple. The process consists of a base coat, color coat and top coat, all cured under a UV light. The products go on just like any regular nail polish. If you can paint your nails, you can apply Shellac.
What you'll need:
Shellac Base Coat
Shellac Color Coat
Shellac Top Coat
UV Lamp
Cotton pads
Rubbing Achohol
Light nail buffer
How to apply Shellac
Nail Polish
Step One Prepare Nails: Turn UV lamp on to warm up. Remove traces of old nail polish. Push cuticles back. File your natural nails to desired shape. Lightly buff the entire nail bed. This ensures a good grip with the base coat.
Step Two Base Coat: Apply base coat to one hand. Place hand under UV lamp for 20 seconds. Apply base coat on the other hand and place under lamp for 20 seconds.
Note: Do not apply any of the coats too thick. If you do, the nail polish can peel off. I learned this my first application. Also, don't be afraid if the first coat of the color polish looks too thin. It will be fine once second coat goes on. And do not touch the cuticle. You have to have a steady hand for this. If any of the base, color or top coats touch the cuticles, the polish can and will peel off.
Step Three Color Polish: Paint one hand. Cure under UV lamp for 2 minutes. The polish will look a little thin. Do not worry, it will cover with second coat. After first hand is cured, paint second hand and place under lamp for 2 minutes. Go back to the first hand and apply second coat of color polish then cure again for 2 minutes. Again, repeat on the other hand. So... paint one hand, cure, paint other cure, then repeat that process for second coat.
Step Four Top Coat and finish: Apply top coat to one hand and cure under UV lamp for 2 minutes. Apply top coat on other hand and cure again for 2 minutes. When you're all done, soak a couple of the cotton pads with rubbing alcohol. Wipe each nail as if you are removing nail polish. This removes all traces of the sticky coating on nails.
And that's it! Once again please keep these tips in mind:
  • Buff the entire nail bed before beginning.
  • Do not get any of the products on the cuticles or they will peel and lift.
  • Do not put any of the coats on thick
How to remove Shellac polish
Expect this process to take about 20 minutes. You can buy the remove pads or you can do this:
First, using a light to medium grain nail file, gently buff the surface of the nail polish to remove the shine. Take cotton pads and soak them with Acetone nail polish remover. Place pads on nails and let sit for 5-10 minutes. With an orange wood stick. gently push the polish off nails. Repeat till all traces are off. Gently buff any excess off nails.
