Dry, brittle hair can be caused by one or all of the following factors: over exposure to the sun, chemical processes, under-conditioning, hereditary, poor elasticity, over use of appliances or drying styling products. Hair is made up of dead keratin, so it can't heal itself. Your best bet is to slowly cut off the dead split ends and start fresh. But in the mean time there are ways to make your dry hair appear to be "healthier".
Tips & Tricks to treat dry hair:

  • Hot oil treatments- I personally don't recommend them for one reason. The oil molecule is simply too large to penetrate the hair shaft. All they do is leave a layer of oil on the outer hair shaft which does result in smoother hair but give it a day and you'll see what I mean. Instead, use a cream based, deep conditioner 2 times a week.
  • Get regular hair trims every 6-8 weeks to trim off the spilt ends
  • Cut back on blow drying
  • When blow-drying, force the air in he direction of your hair growth so you don't disturb the cuticle anymore then you have to.
  • Use Boars hair brushes. These distribute oils better throughout the hair, down the hair shaft.
  • Use daily conditioners and even better, use a leave-in conditioner as well
  • Rinse with cool water as your final rinse to close the cuticle and prevent further damage.
  • Avoid shampoos that are clear in color. These shampoos are refereed to as plain shampoos. Plain shampoos contain little to no moisturizer. Opt for a pearlized one that is made for dry, damaged hair. Shampoos can do a world of damage!!! Opt to buy a good moisturizing shampoo.
  • Keep use of heating products to a minimum if possible. And always use a styling product that specifically protect hair during heat process.
  • Scalp treatments can do wonders. Ask your Stylist if she offers this service. Not only does it stimulate hair growth and condition your hair, it feels great!
  • Use products that don't contain alcohol
  • Deep condition at least 2 times a week. Apply the conditioner to clean, damp hair. Put a shower cap on and hit it with the blow dryer. This will open up the cuticle and condition your hair better.
