You’re sitting at your desk whether in school or at work playing with your hair and what do you see? Dreaded split ends! How can you have split ends… you just got a haircut! Broken ends happen to even the best head of hair. Can you repair, mend and protect your hair from brittle ends? Let’s see….
Do you have dry, brittle ends of your hair that break off with a slight tug? These are called split ends. Here are a few causes of split ends: heat tools such as flat irons and harsh blow drying, not getting your hair cut regularly, the use of bad shampoos and not conditioning your hair enough to name a few.
Can you repair split ends?
No. Once hair is split, it can’t be repaired or magically glue back together again. So all those hair products that claim to mend split ends are a waste of time and money. The only way to rid your hair of these ends is to cut them off. However, you can repair dry hair BEFORE it splits.
How to prevent and avoid split ends
Number one rule is avoiding heat. Yeah right! In this day in age ask a girl to give up her flat iron or blow dryer is like asking her not to breathe. So what can we do without sacrificing our beloved heat tools?
Every time you take your hair down from the towel after a shower you should be applying some type of protectant to your tresses. Any and all hair products give some type of heat protection. Most women avoid using hair products on hair because they cause hair to become limp and greasy. If this is the case… you’re using the wrong products! There are some really nice light weight hair treatments that leave hair shiny, full and most important… protected. Here are our absolute top favorites for heat protection and avoiding split ends:
This is a super light leave in conditioner and detangler. Just spray it on damp hair then comb thru ends. Smells great too!
An absolute top notch product any hair type can handle. It's a cream product that leaves hair super shiny, soft and frizz free! They state to apply to dry hair but it works wonders when applied to damp hair before drying. Just one pump is all you need.
Women tend not to cut their hair on a regular basis because they want their hair to grow. If you find your hair doesn’t grow with a regular cut schedule it means your stylist is cutting off too much. Even as much as ¼ inch off your ends is enough to help prevent and trim down split ends. Split ends are actually the reason why women think their hair doesn’t grow. It comes into play with that age old myth that cutting your hair makes hair grow faster. False!! It doesn’t. BUT it does stop the bottom of your hair from breaking off and gives a nice blunt look to hair ends. Thus making hair appear longer. And your hair length to stops breaking off. So, cut your hair every 6 to 8 weeks and after a few visits you’ll notice healthier, longer hair.
Just because the woman on the commercial has nice shiny, full hair doesn’t mean a shampoo is good. All you need to do is look for a Sulfate Free Shampoo. These shampoos are much gentler on the hair and will help prevent split ends. Just remember you need to wash twice to get that thick lather we all love. Check out our Sulfate Free Shampoo list.
It still amazes me when clients say they don’t use conditioner on a regular basis because it makes their hair weighed down and greasy. First off if your hair is greasy it’s because you’re over shampooing and causing your oily hairbut that a whole other topic. And if your hair feels weighed down you’re simply using the wrong type of conditioner for your hair type. Even if you want to skip this step... Just condition hair about 3 inches down from your roots.
