One misconception about frizzy hair is that frizzies only occur on curly hair. But I'm sure some of you who are looking for frizzy hair advice, know this is not always true. Frizzy hair can be straight, curly wavy or kinky. Cuticle layers on the hair shaft stand up, like a Christmas tree, causing hair to feel and look frizzy. Frizzy hair is naturally more porous than smooth hair, and it absorbs the extra moisture in the air, causing the hair shaft to over expand, cuticle layers to stand out and frizz.
- Add a dab of moisturizer to your hair styling products.
- Moisture-rich products will fill up the cuticle. This blocks access water (humidity) from seeping in and causing hair to swell.
- Never rub hair with a towel. This will aggravate the cuticle and cause it to stand up.
- Try not to blow dry hair all the way,
- When blow drying, angle dryer in a downward motion toward the ends of hair
- Deep conditioning every other week or once a week
- Rinse hair with cool water to seal the hair cuticles
- Use a diffuser attachment when blow drying hair
- Frequent shampooing can dry hair out and encourage the frizz
- Use products to control the frizz
- Use silicone based products such as 'Frizz Ease'. Use sparingly.
- Avoid using products with alcohol. They can dry your hair

The Truth about frizzy hair
Another misconception is that frizzies are caused only by over processing the hair with chemicals and heat. Yes, of coarse this is the major cause. But many women, even those with "virgin" hair, battle frizzies everyday. Whether your frizz is caused by genetics or by over processing your hair, there is hope!
The Ultimate Goal to control frizzy hair ....................................
This is all you need to understand how to fix your frizzy hair:
First, the cuticle layers on a frizzy hair strand look just like a Christmas tree. The layers need to be smoothed into a rolled up Christmas tree, as I like to put it. So your first goal is to SMOOTH THE CUTICLE.
Second, since the cuticle layers are opened, this exposes the inner hair shaft to damage and loss of moisture. Your second goal is too CONDITION AND REPLACE VALUABLE NUTRIENTS.
When I first started to write this article, I planned on getting into the chemical aspect of hair products, such as the use of silicones. But after doing much research I have come to one conclusion: Everyone and their mother has a different opinion as to if silicones hurt or help hair. I've read everything from yes, it helps as it smoothes the cuticle and locks in moisture. And the other half says it strangles the hair because it blocks moisture from getting into the hair, and we all need moisture. So I am going to skip the chemical analysis and stick to basic products, and what actually works and why it works.
- Look for smoothing balms. Even if it says "smooth straight hair", all this means is that the product is made to lay the cuticle smooth. It doesn't mean it's going to actually straighten your entire head. So these work great even for the curliest of heads.
- Avoid alcohol if possible. Alcohol will dry out hair.
- Use protein based conditioners. Protein conditioners are not every detangling and you will need an additional conditioner if your hair tangles.
Products that actually DO work
These are products that myself and my stylists use day to day and love. You will not see any drugstore brands, as it's been 10 years since I've walked down a drugstore isle. But you can look for similar products to these, we just can't recommend something we do not use:
What they say: BioSilk Therapy is weightless, leave - in silk replenishing and reconstructing treatment to repair, smooth and protect all hair types. Here's what we say: Love it! It truly helps smooth the cuticle and creates smooth, shiny, soft hair. You can apply to damp hair to condition and create smooth, shiny hair. If you use it as a finishing product, after the hair is dry, it adds shine and definition. However, if used on dry hair, do not use too much hair or hair will appear greasy. Also works as an awesome moisturizer on the skin!

What they say: Silk Reconstructing Complex. What we say: this is similar to Biosilk. but it's slightly lighter. and wow! The hair is super silky with no frizz! Apply to damp hair as above. And dry hair as above. Works perfect!

An acidic rinse if the best frizz stopper! The acidity restores the ph balance in the hair and closes the cuticle down, thus leaving the hair shaft smooth. You can use this after every shampoo. Create a rinse by using either vinegar, apple cider vinegar, lemon. Combine 1 once to 1 quart of water. Pour through hair to get rid of buildup and soften hair at the same time. Rinse with tap water. How do I use a Diffuser to blow-dry my hair? Place the diffuser nozzle on the end on the dryer. Set the heat to cool or warm. For volume at the roots, flip head upside down and place the teeth of the diffuser directly into the root are. Use the teeth to lift the root. Move the diffuser around the head. For a hair diffuser to work correctly, you must stay close to the hair since the air flow is restricted. Lift the ends of the hair with the diffuser, almost as if you were using your fingers to scrunch the hair. Dry hair about 80% of the way. Read about Ionic and ceramic technology to reduce frizz.
What a Diffuser can do for your hair: Diffusers are extremely useful for minimizing heat damage from blow dryers by distributing the harsh dryer heat more evenly throughout your hair. The air flow is lessoned by the diffuser, which takes hair longer to dry. But for those who have curls, the diffuser can be your best friend. The hair diffuser creates great volume for curly hair along with keeping your curls intact.
Most blow-dryers come with a diffuser attachment, a plastic attachment that fits on the end of the dryer. A Blow dryer diffuser dries hair in a healthier manor that diffuses or spreads out air flow from the hair dryer.
