What’s all the hype about sulfate free shampoos? You’ve probably heard your hair stylist recommend sulfate free shampoo for years now. It used to be difficult trying to find this elusive shampoo. You’d have to grab your magnifying glass and read the back of bottle after bottle. But recently I’m sure you’ve noticed the advertising market explode with sulfate free products, making it much easier and cheaper to find these types of shampoos.
What is sulfate free shampoo?
When referring to shampoo sulfates, you’re speaking about surfactants. Surfactants are cleansing detergents that create thick, lathering shampoo bubbles. These sulfates help break down the surface tension of water, allowing the breakup of grease. What does this mean to shampoo?  When a shampoo contains sulfates, it contains harsh detergent that over time can strip the precious oils from your scalp and hair. Sulfate free shampoos use gentler cleansing agents that allow the hair and scalp to become clean without excess stripping of bennificial oils.
Sulfate free shampoo doesn’t lather?
If you’re using a sulfate free shampoo and not seeing lather the first time you shampoo, that’s completely normal. Because these shampoos don’t contain the typical lathering agent, you’ll see little to no lather when they first come in contact with a dirty scalp. Does this mean it’s not cleaning? No! This means we are so obsessed with lather that we think our hair is not clean without all the bubbles.

When using a sulfate free shampoo you must shampoo twice to see that precious lather we love. Basically the first shampoo is breaking down and removing all the grease and product buildup without the bubbles. The second shampoo, because it’s not dealing with excess dirt and grime, gives you all the lather you want!
Benefits to using a sulfate free shampoo
  • Hair color stays lasts much longer. You’ll see a noticeable difference in how long your hair color lasts without fading or turning brassy.
  • Curly hair retains its bounce. Elasticity is retained better for all hair types.
  • Hair will be less frizzy and dry.
  • Sulfate free shampoo is much more conditioning than shampoos contains sulfate
  • Less irritating to people with allergies and skin conditions such as eczema. You may even notice a remarkable improvement in these skin conditions after a month’s use.
